Grabango Recognized as the Best Overall Computer Vision Solution with the 2021 AI Breakthrough Award

June 23rd, 2021

We are honored that Grabango was named the winner of “Best Overall Computer Vision Solution” in the fourth annual AI Breakthrough Awards program, conducted by Tech Breakthrough. As the only company to have developed AI systems advanced enough to operate checkout-free retrofits in existing stores, we are grateful for the recognition of this groundbreaking work and humbled to be seen as a leader in the fast-moving, computer vision category.

Our work at Grabango brings the power of sophisticated AI to bear on resolving a very human problem: waiting in line at the grocery store. Since launching in 2016, we’ve built a generalized solution by elevating our technology to meet the demands of the real world. We’ve been able to drive down the cost of hardware, radically reduce computational requirements and deploy it all on distributed edge processing. We’ve also trained our AI to deliver category-leading accuracy that’s far better than the legacy POS barcode scanners.

“Grabango is tackling the challenge of improving the retail shopping experience by eliminating lines at checkout,” said James Johnson, managing director at Tech Breakthrough. “With a breakthrough combination of computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies, Grabango is completely reinventing in-store commerce, eliminating checkout lines and saving people time. What Grabango is doing really puts into focus how AI can add value to our everyday lives by reclaiming time itself. We are thrilled to congratulate the entire Grabango team on winning the ‘Best Overall Computer Vision Solution’ award.”

The mission of the AI Breakthrough Awards is to honor excellence and recognize successful innovations in a range of related categories, including AI platforms, deep learning architecture, and computer vision applications. This year’s program attracted more than 2,850 nominations from 17 different countries around the world.

“All of my career has been focused on solving difficult technical problems that have broad applications to everyday life,” said Will Glaser, founder and CEO of Grabango. “This incredible acknowledgement of our AI Breakthrough points to the significant business opportunities this advantage unlocks for the company.  We are scaling fast to improve the way people interact with things.”

To date, Grabango has deployed over 60,000 square feet of shopping floor, operates across 150,000 SKUs, and processes an incredible 22 petabytes of data through its systems every day.
